FROZEN DEAD GUY DAYS, annually in spring
Nederland’s annual Frozen Dead Guy Days celebrates Bredo Morstøl, “Grandpa in the Tuff Shed.” Morstøl died in 1989, and remains cryogenically frozen, in a Tuff Shed, until technology can revive him. Frozen Dead Guy Days includes coffin races, a frozen-salmon toss, a Grandpa look-alike contest, and an evening dance, Grandpa’s Blue Ball. 2009 dates are March 6-8. 720-374-6742.
Started in the 1880s, Miners’ Days celebrates the mountain town’s mining heritage with a weekend of action. Men and women compete in spike driving, hand and machine drilling, and other traditional events in this annual prize competition. There are also amateur and children’s events, craft booths, a parade and more. For more information about this and other Nederland community events: 303-258-7449.
For a real runner’s high, head to the Neder-Nederland High Altitude 5k and 10k, the last in the Boulder County Five Race Series. These races, annually in September, start at Nederland High School (597 County Road 130) at 9am with the firing of the ancient cannon. 720-374-6742.
