Fashion-forward clothes that kids can be kids in
By Lisa Truesdale Like most new moms-to-be, the first thing Kira O’Brien did after finding out she was having a baby was to tell her husband (of course), her family and her closest friends. And the second thing?
Passion Project
Evascu’s first career was in the world of finance, before she stepped away for several years to devote her time to raising her children. But she always had her “passion project” simmering on the back burner, and when the time was right, she opened Nest in Cherry Creek in 2010, with the Boulder location following three years later. (Cherry Creek is also home to her “tween” boutique, Hatched, and Firebird, a book and toy store.) “My philosophy is that children should be allowed to be children,” she says. “So I wanted to open a children’s store with fashion-forward, brightly colored clothes that kids are excited to wear—clothes they can get dirty.” With the help of her experienced staff, Evascu stays on top of the latest trends, shopping at the biggest and best markets in New York City and Los Angeles to find just what her customers are looking for. But she also strives to keep things very “Colorado-centric,” she says, adding that the Colorado lifestyle is a unique one. “We think we have Colorado kids pretty well figured out. With the way that the seasons progress here, and how it can be freezing cold in the morning and warm that same afternoon, we offer a lot of options that make layering easy.”
Plenty for Boys
Unlike some children’s boutiques that seem heavy on frills, bows and 50 shades of pink, Nest prides itself on offering just as many fashionable options for boys as it does for girls. In fact, Evascu says, she often hears people comment that there are no good clothes for boys, and she takes it as somewhat of a personal challenge. “I’m proud of our selection of boys’ clothing,” she says, adding that the polo shirts Nest sells come in bright, funky colors boys love. They’re soft like a T-shirt, so boys think they’re fun to wear and play in, but moms are happy that they’re wearing something dressier than a tee. Nest’s “polo club” gives you a fifth shirt free when you buy four. Two clothing brands both boys and parents like are Taylor Vintage, with its reversible shorts, and the Appaman line, whose sporty tops and bottoms include very popular graphic tees, some with retro designs. Boy or girl (she’s not telling), O’Brien looks forward to the day when she can take her child into the store with her. “They offer snacks and a coloring station, and sometimes they set out supplies for a craft project,” she says. “And the mirrored ‘stage’ by the dressing rooms is precious.
