Exploring the southern Caribbean in the former Netherlands Antilles
By Robert Sweeney
Of the many Caribbean diving trips I’ve been on, Bonaire is the most relaxing and laid-back. Governed by the Netherlands, the island is a cultural mix of Dutch, Dominican, and South American influences. On a visit with Emily Sweeney, we explored one of the island’s top resorts and, of course, went diving.
Nestled in a secluded cove on the picturesque island of Bonaire, Harbour Village Beach Club exudes a timeless charm that beckons travelers seeking a perfect blend of luxury and tranquility. As the sun casts its golden glow over the powdery white sands and the gentle southern Caribbean waves lap at the shore, guests at Harbour Village find themselves enveloped in a world of natural beauty and understated elegance.
The resort offers a variety of room types catering to every guest’s desire for comfort and luxury. From the spacious beachfront suites boasting breathtaking views of the turquoise sea to the quaint cottages nestled amidst lush gardens, each abode is a carefully crafted sanctuary, providing an ideal retreat for travelers seeking solace and relaxation. With a soothing ambiance and modern amenities, the rooms offer an ideal “home away from home,” allowing guests to unwind in an unparalleled setting of serenity.
For ultimate relaxation, the resort’s Spa is a haven of rejuvenation. Expert therapists deliver an array of luxurious treatments to soothe the body, mind, and soul. From indulgent massages to invigorating facials, the spa’s holistic approach ensures that each guest is treated to a personalized wellness experience. The serene atmosphere, coupled with the rhythmic melody of the ocean, forms a soothing backdrop for complete rejuvenation and renewal.
Dining at Harbour Village is a celebration of the island’s rich culinary heritage. The oceanfront restaurant, with its enchanting views of the sea, offers a tantalizing array of gourmet dishes that expertly showcase the vibrant flavors of Bonaire. Guests can savor freshly caught seafood, succulent meats, and a medley of vibrant local produce. We enjoyed a private dining option, a romantic torch-lit dinner directly on the beach.
Venturing out, we discovered two exceptional restaurants: Zara’s and It Rains Fishes. Zara’s chef’s table offers a six-course dinner, each course paired with wine or handcrafted cocktail. Upstairs, guests can opt for a traditional menu. The service and food were exceptional. At It Rains Fishes, we dined in a historic 100-year-old building with a waterfront view of the Caribbean. Homemade dishes included fish carpaccio alongside an extensive wine pairing list.
Bonaire’s National Marine Park is renowned for its easy shore diving and underwater marine life. The resort’s on-site PADI 5-star dive center Great Adventures Bonaire, provides a gateway to a mesmerizing underwater paradise. Diving enthusiasts can embark on exhilarating excursions at 86 dive sites to explore vibrant coral reefs, encounter an array of marine life, and discover a historic shipwreck waiting to unveil its story. The experienced dive team ensures that each expedition is safe, educational, and awe-inspiring for divers of all levels. We also dove with Dive Friends Bonaire – they have seven dive shops on the island, making it easy to pop in for a shore dive from any part of town.
Non-divers won’t want to miss out on the world-class snorkeling experiences, either. Colorful fish, coral formations, and other underwater sights in crystal-clear waters await both seasoned divers and novice snorkelers right off the shore. To explore the nearby uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire for even more stunning snorkeling and diving opportunities, Epic Tours offers a five-hour catamaran snorkel and sunset dinner tour. Their multi-course dinner and service was top notch.
Beyond the idyllic confines of Harbour Village, Bonaire is a treasure trove of natural beauty and vibrant cultural experiences. The island’s unspoiled landscapes and diverse ecosystems offer endless opportunities for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Whether it’s hiking, birdwatching in the national parks, or windsurfing and kitesurfing along the coast, Bonaire has something for everyone. To try landsailing, visitors can ride and steer a Blokart around a small racetrack.
For those seeking a deeper understanding of Bonaire’s rich history and heritage, the island’s charming towns and historical sites provide a glimpse into its colorful past. A visit to the island’s capital, Kralendijk, presents an opportunity to stroll along the lively waterfront promenade, where vibrant architecture, local boutiques, and inviting cafes paint a picturesque scene. History buffs will appreciate landmarks such as the 17th-century Fort Oranje, which reflects Bonaire’s strategic significance during the colonial era. A drive to the east coast offers a chance to visit the Willemstoren Lighthouse and the Salt Mountains, the island’s main export.
As the day gracefully transitions into evening, the allure of the beachfront is irresistible. Guests can revel in the tranquil beauty of the sun setting over the horizon, casting a warm glow over the pristine beach. Whether enjoying a romantic beachfront dinner or simply basking in the tranquility of their surroundings, every moment spent at Harbour Village Beach Club is a testament to the resort’s commitment to providing a truly exceptional and immersive experience for each and every guest.
