CSAs: Farms with Benefits

The idea of Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) is nothing new, but with the continuing uncertainty brought on by a global pandemic, a more local approach to getting food has more appeal than ever.

While farmers markets have changed the way they operate this year, there’s still plenty of fresh organic fare available through a mutually beneficial relationship with a local farmer. Choosing the CSA that fits your lifestyle is only a matter of deciding which benefits are most attractive to you.

Choice vs. Surprise

If you like keeping your options open, look for CSAs that allow you to pick and choose, taking what you know will get used, avoiding waste. Some CSA subscriptions are pre-packaged, including a diverse and changing mix of crops each week. If you’re an adventurous cook who looks forward to trying new things, each week’s share has the potential to surprise.

Delivery vs. Pick Up

Many CSAs offer delivery and more have added the service in response to COVID-19. If farm-to-door strikes your fancy, but you’re also the pick-and-choose type, ask if the CSA offers online ordering. Miss the in-person experience? Look for a CSA with a farm stand (typically located on or near the property). You can ask questions and purchase spur-of-the-moment add-ons. All from a safe social distance, of course!

Whatever option fits you best, be sure to sign up soon. Many CSAs start taking membership signups in the fall for the following year—and they run out of shares quickly!
