Required Reading: “The Warmth of Other Suns”

19 Oct 2020

Louisville resident Kevin Gebert, inspired by historical novel, “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson, launched a GoFundMe campaign to bring more books addressing Black history and social injustice into the Louisville Public Library. After reaching out to the library to inquire about books of this nature, he was told they had very few and the waiting list for Wilkerson's novel was 16 people. The campaign, EDI—which stands for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion—has raised nearly $2500 (at press time) through online fundraising as well as direct donations to the library. This will pay for 180 additional books, and because the library is part of a consortium, these books will be available through libraries in Boulder, Lafayette, Longmont and Loveland. Gebert says, “My next campaign will be to get books like these into our local schools as mandatory reading.”

Let’s keep the conversation going.
