Boulder's first winery moves to Nederland
Gussie Walter has garnered two firsts for Augustina’s Winery. When she opened it in Boulder 19 years ago, it was Boulder’s first winery. Now located in Nederland, Augustina’s is the first winery in that town too. “I was eyeballing Nederland for a while because I live nearby and Boulder is getting crowded with wineries,” Walter says. She hadn’t considered moving into Nederland’s shopping center, but when Very Nice Brewing Company proved it could be a successful location, she took another look and moved the winery in May. As at the brewery, Augustina’s customers are invited to bring their own food. They can sample Augustina’s wines or sit down with a glass of wine. The tasting room holds just 13 people, which Walter thinks is perfect. She serves 12 of her own wines along with some other Colorado wines of varieties that she doesn’t make, like sweet wines and Chardonnays. She also offers mead from Medovina. Barrels and tanks used in the winemaking are visible from the tasting room, and although it’s a relatively small production space, Walter says she can be “super flexible” because she works in smaller lots. She contracts with various vineyards, so a bad harvest year affects her less. She uses grapes from a few vineyards in Colorado, including one on the eastern plains and a couple of small vineyards in Boulder County. If you can’t make it up to Nederland, you can sample some of Augustina’s wines at the Boulder Farmers’ Market and a few other summer festivals.
