Cozy Up Your Home

When the weather outside turns crisp and cool, we crave all things soft and warm as we prepare to snuggle deeper into our homes. We’ve rounded up some local professionals’ best ideas for how to make everything from your nose to your toes stay fabulously cozy this season.
1. Pretty Poufs
Coziness is about comfort, which is why HW Home recommends ottomans to soften and warm your decor for the season. Such small pieces—like their Pluto Upholstered Ottoman ($1,050), a modern square form upholstered with a hand-knotted rug—can be a place to put up your feet or extra seating for casual parties. The Hand-Loomed Ottoman ($390) is a softer pouf version covered in hand-loomed wool, and both add stunning texture and depth to any room.

2. Simmering Scents
The delicious aromas of cinnamon, spice and everything nice aren’t reserved solely for your coffee or tea cup! Spread some of those cozy scents throughout your house with mulling spices from Savory Spice (1/2-cup bag $6.99, 3-cup bag $23.99). Their salt-free, coarse blend produces an aroma that’s cinnamon-y, sweet, pungent and faintly eucalyptic. Simmer the mixture in water for scent alone, add to red wine or brandy for glögg, or enjoy it in apple cider.

3. Terrific Towels
Softness in the kitchen often comes from our textiles, meaning that switching out your kitchen towels, placemats, napkins and hot pads can feel like a massive upgrade in comfort. Neighborhood favorite McGuckin Hardware carries a wide selection of options, such as the Brooklyn Stripe Towels in poppy color ($14.99 for set of four) with a matching poppy silicone trivet ($16.99). Or snuggle into a cabin style with Primitive Designs’ moose- and buffalo-themed kitchenware, like the Watercolor Wildlife Napkins ($6.99/each).

4. Fuzzy Under Your Feet
The right area rug can feel like heaven beneath your feet while reducing noise and adding soft layers to a room. Babaee Rug Gallery, where all the rugs are handmade with natural fibers, carries all sizes and types. Highly recommended by Babaee’s rug professionals: The Gabbeh rug, a Persian/Iranian style dating from the 16th century that feels strikingly modern. Rejuvenate an entire room with an 8-by-10 or 8-by-8 hand-woven Gabbeh rug in primary red, yellow and blue ($500/each) or sink into the thick pile of a hand-knotted version edged in blue, ideal in a room with less traffic ($2,000, 5-by-8).

5. Cocktail Time
Spruce up your bar cart or cabinet for the season at Hazel’s Beverage World, where they recommend cozying up to bourbons and ryes to warm the stomach when the weather cools. Liquor manager Tyler Ziskin uses Old Forester Bourbon to make The Winter’s Eve cocktail (see recipe below). For the wine lover, turn your eyes toward the Alvear Palacio Quemado La Zarcita red. For only $19.98, this rich and intense red wine has great fruit undertones and pairs well with holiday meals.
