ELI’S WEEKLY IDEA: Repurpose old lightbulbs for your plants

05 Jul 2015

For a super-modern twist on the hanging planter or vase, try repurposing old lightbulbs for your plants.

bulb dirtThis is an easy DIY that involves unscrewing the metal part of the bulb and removing the burnt-out filament (find step-by-step instructions here).

If you want to hang the bulb, coil wire around the lip of the metal to create an attachment. Otherwise, figure out a way to make the bulb stand up; one good solution is to put three plastic stabilizers on the rounded glass bottom.

Rinse out the glass, reattach to the metal, and you now have an awesome vase! Bonus: if you use this as a planter, choose plants that enjoy water. Leaving the bulb's glass filled with water instead of soil will open a direct window to the plant's roots.
