Pandemic Picnics

Whether a family adventure or a romantic meal alfresco, here are some ideas for taking an original “social distancing” activity to new heights.

Ah, picnics. The original socially distanced form of outdoor dining. Grab some friends or opt for a day date—just you, your beloved (OK—maybe your kids and dog, too), a blanket and a basket full of finger foods. Boulder County has some pretty iconic spots, of course. Chautauqua, Central Park, Valmont Park, Waneka and McIntosh lakes—the list goes on. Or you could try an off-the-beaten path spot such as Lover’s Hill Park. Just north of East Pearl Street, at the intersection of 22nd Street and Bluff, you’ll find a little passage up the hill to a sweet little spot near Mesa Vista of Boulder.

Wherever you choose to park your blanket, be sure you have these essentials for a picnic-perfect event.

For a thematic outdoor date, pick a fun wicker basket with a plaid liner. Or, if you’re really heading off the beaten path, opt for a backpack-style cooler.

Don’t forget a fun blanket to keep your butts dry if the grass is damp! Choose a colorful, fun print like this one that folds up into itself for easy packing in—and it’s waterproof for all springtime weather conditions.

Consider canned or boxed wine for more portable libations and check your favorite local liquor store or winery for a Colorado wine. Options that pair well with cheese and charcuterie include sauvignon blanc or rosé, but it’s really up to you. You may find a water bottle or juice box does the trick just fine!
