Rebecca’s Recommendations: Make Body Wash from Your Favorite Soap

06 Apr 2016

Use your favorite bar soap to make this body wash

Bar soap tends to be much cheaper than its liquid counterpart. And sometimes, amazing scents are only available in bars. But, bar soap is slippery and often washes away to a mere sliver in a week or two. But here’s how to turn that bar into liquid gold, so to speak! This “recipe” for making body wash uses an 8-ounce bar of soap and yields about 1 gallon of liquid soap. It can easily be adjusted for the size of your bar by halving the recipe for a 4-ounce bar that yields 2 quarts of liquid soap, and so on.
What you’ll need:
1 8-ounce bar of soap A cheese grater A pot 1 gallon of distilled water A container or containers in which to store 1 gallon of liquid soap (the distilled water jug works well for this, or you could use several containers and place them in different bathrooms)
Instructions:
Fill the pot with 1 gallon of distilled water. Grate the entire bar of soap and add the shavings to the pot of water. Warm the pot over medium-high heat and stir until the soap shavings fully dissolve. Turn off the heat and leave the soap mixture to set for about 12 hours, then mix the soap water thoroughly and decant into the container. Tip: A quick once-over with an electric mixer makes short work of the mixing task.
